October 28, 2017 — Basel, Switzerland
Roger executed another flawless match this morning in front of his hometown crowd to earn him a spot into the finals.
After being pushed to three sets against Adrian Mannarino in the Quarterfinals (4-6, 6-1, 6-3), the Swiss star faced the always tricky David Goffin. Roger broke early and remained in control the whole way winning 6-1, 6-2.
He will face Juan Martin del Porto yet again this year in the finals tomorrow.
October 26, 2017 -- Basel, Switzerland
Roger cruised into the Quarterfinals in his hometown tournament today against Benoit Paire. Needing less than an hour, he served and returned in solid fashion and never faced a break point to take the match 6-1, 6-3.
"It feels nice. I've played good tennis from the start of this tournament. There's always extra pressure playing at home and wanting to do well and try to stay in the tournament," he said. "I'm happy to be through to the quarters and we'll see what happens now."
Up next for Roger will be 28th ranked, Adrian Mannarino.
October 24, 2017 -- Basel, Switzerland
Roger took to the court in front of his hometown and needed just 61 minutes today in his first round match against American Frances Tiafoe. He looked comfortable on the court and showed no weaknesses as he captured a 6-1, 6-3 win and won every one of his first serve points and broke four times during the match.
Next up will be Benoit Paire.
Roger has been in 12 Finals at Basel and is looking to win his 7th title of the season.
October 15, 2017 -- Shanghai, China
Roger clinched his 27th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title today and sixth title of the year after facing Rafael Nadal for the fourth time in 2017.
Playing near flawless, the Swiss star was aggressive and capitalized when he needed to as he dominated the match winning 6-4, 6-3.
This win marks Roger's 700th hard court victory as he improved to 10-1 against top 10 players in 2017. It is his 94th title of his career, now putting him level with Ivan Lendl. And the year is not over yet!
"I had no nerves really before the match, which was nice," he said. "I was pretty clear about how I wanted to play the match. And then I came out and started off very well. Felt relaxed from then on. I always know that Rafa can come back at any moment if he connects well, picks the right sides, and does the right things. The serve only got better. I guess I saved the best for last. I played some good matches now against del Potro and also now these two sets. In a way, it's not surprising, because I did feel good all week, and it does pay off to arrive early to an event. You can't do it all the time, but I was here since Thursday late night and that's five, six days to prepare for a Wednesday match. So I was ready."
October 14, 2017 -- Shanghai, China
After being taken out in the US Open by Juan Martin del Potro, Roger had a chance to beat the big hitting Argentine today in the semifinals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters. While Roger struggled to convert break points in the first set, he held on and waited for del Potro to make some errors to turn the match in his favor. After dropping the first set 6-3, the Swiss Maestro did not allow del Potro a break point for the rest of the match and won the final two sets 6-3, 6-3.
"Clearly getting the break and then holding, it's always key in tennis," he said. "I'm happy I was able to do it, especially with all the twists and turns and, blink at the wrong time, he might hold the game and then you don't know what's going to happen next."
This win takes Roger into his third final at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event. He won Shanghai in 2014. And he will face Rafael Nadal in the finals for the fourth time in 2017. Roger has beaten Rafa each time they have played this year including the finals of the Australian Open, the finals of Miami and the Round of 16 at the Indian Wells BNP Paribas Open.
