Roger and Team Europe clinched the Laver Cup Sunday afternoon in dramatic fashion.
To take the title, Roger needed to beat Team World player, Nick Kyrgios, in the final singles match. In front of an electric crowd, Roger battled the young Australian pushing the match to a deciding 3rd set 10-point tiebreak and clinching the title 4-6, 7-6(6), 11-9.
“I was ready to go – I had to be,” he said, who ended up contributing three victories and seven points to the hosts’ 15-9 victory. “That’s what a team member does. The boys played fantastic all weekend, but we knew it could change very quickly on Sunday. The Team World boys have been great, in the doubles especially, and we knew it was going to be tough. I was looking at getting ready for a doubles at the very end. I’m very pleased and relived that we did win the singles and got it done.”
Roger also recorded wins against Sam Querrey, 6-2, 6-4; and teamed up with Rafael Nadal to beat Sam Querrey and Jack Sock 6-4, 1-6, 10-5.
September 22, 2017 marks the 20 year anniversary of the 1st rankings points Roger earned as he made his debut on the ATP Tour at no. 803 back in 1997.
“The ATP rankings is where it all starts for every player," Roger said. "It's about getting your foot on the ladder and seeing your name on the computer rankings for the first time. I'll never forget that moment and the excitement I felt after that Satellite. It was the start of a long journey to the top for me. I think that's the great thing about our sport; the rankings provide a really accurate barometer of where you stand compared to your peers. The computer doesn't lie. It's amazing to think that 20 years later I'm still in the game and still with a chance to get to year-end No.1 in 2017. I never imagined having such longevity."

Roger and the rest of Team Europe, as well as Team World, are getting ready for the Laver Cup to begin!
September 6, 2017 -- Flushing Meadows, NYC
Facing one of the toughest competitors on the ATP Tour, Roger took the court against Juan Martin del Potro Wednesday night for their quarterfinal matchup. Having clawed his was back from being 2 sets down in his previous match, del Potro looked strong as he blasted forehands against the Swiss star who admittedly wasn't feeling as strong as he had in the other Grand Slams he played in this year.
“I didn't have that feeling at Wimbledon or at the Australian Open, and that's why rightfully so I'm out of this tournament, because I wasn't good enough, in my mind, in my body, and in my game to overcome these three pillars."
Roger pushed Del Po to 4 sets in front of the electric crowd, but just didn't have enough to put the Argentinean player away. Juan Martin del Potro won the Quarterfinal matchup 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(8), 6-4. He goes on to face Rafael Nadal.
As for Roger, after an already amazing year, there is still more to get excited about in 2017. The season is far from over as he is looking forward to the Laver Cup, Shanghai, Basel, Paris and London.
“I have big priorities for the rest of the year, and I usually play very well towards the end. Now I just really need to recover and go back to the practice courts and hopefully just finish strong. Whatever that may be, I just want to play good tennis and enjoy myself.”
September 4, 2017 -- Flushing Meadows, NYC
Roger faced yet another player he has never lost to in his Round of 16 match today.
The 3rd seed defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber this evening in routine fashion without facing a break point. The 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 puts Roger with a 12-0 record over Kohlschreiber and sets up a Quarterfinal clash with Juan Martin del Potro who clawed his way back from two sets down in his match.
"To play him here again after our epic final in 2009, it’s great for both of us and I think we’re both looking forward to it. At least I am," Roger said after reflecting on their US Open match in 2009.
Roger remains undefeated in Grand Slam matches this year.
